Feltmaking Does Not Have to Be Guesswork
Julia shows you how to work with measurements, fibre density and shrinkage factors — without losing the beauty and liveliness of the material. Instead of hoping that the final size will somehow work out, you learn how to guide the process with clear decisions at every stage.
Beautiful Edges Start at the Layout
A clean edge is not something you “fix” at the end. It begins in the very first layers. Julia demonstrates how she works with threads, fibre direction and precise edge control, so your felted pieces look intentional, refined and professionally finished.
One Small Scarf — Many Future Projects
The scarf is your practice format. The method goes much further. What you learn here — layout, density, shrinkage, staged transitions, the square method, prefelt, fulling and finishing — can later be applied to larger shawls, garments and your own textile designs.
About the course
This Is More Than a Scarf Course At first glance, this course is about making a small felt scarf. But in reality, it teaches something much more valuable: a calm, logical and reliable way of working with felt. Julia Struzh takes you step by step through the entire process — from tools and materials to shrinkage calculation, layout, edges, prefelt, fulling and final shaping. You will see not only what she does, but why she does it. This makes the course especially useful if you want to move beyond copying a project and begin to understand felt as a material: how it shrinks, how it moves, how it reacts to pressure, water, soap and handling — and how your decisions during layout influence the final result. The scarf is small enough to be manageable, but rich enough to teach essential techniques for much larger work.
Course Format
What Is Included This course includes: detailed video lessons in English. step-by-step instruction from layout to final finish. close-up demonstrations of important technical moments. clear explanations of shrinkage, edge work and fulling. design ideas and material suggestions. access to the course curriculum on the Felting Academy learning platform. The course is designed so you can follow the project at your own pace and return to the lessons whenever you need to review a specific technique.
Your Instructor: Julia Struzh
Julia Struzh lives in Cologne and has been working with felt for almost 20 years. She has taught in different settings, including the Filzschule Oberrot, her own studio and intensive workshops. Originally trained as a mathematician and programmer, Julia brings a very clear and structured way of thinking into feltmaking. Her great passion is wearable felt — a field where precision, patience, material sensitivity and refined details truly matter. Julia’s work shows that careful technique does not limit creativity. On the contrary: when you understand the process, you can work with more freedom, more calm and more joy.

WHO IT IS FOR
Who Is This Course For? This course is ideal for you if you want to: understand wet felting more clearly. stop guessing and start working with more control. improve your edges, layout and shrinkage results. learn a method you can use beyond one single scarf. prepare for larger felt surfaces, shawls or garments. work with precision without losing creativity. develop a calmer, more confident feltmaking process. The course is suitable for patient beginners as well as experienced feltmakers who want to refine their technique and understand the process more deeply. You do not need complicated specialist equipment. What matters most is attention, curiosity, willingness to work carefully — and joy in the process.
What students are saying
Julia’s course is valued for its clear explanations, precise technique and practical details that even experienced feltmakers can immediately use.
I am a beginner in felting, and taking this course was my first attempt at creating a piece that I could wear. By doing so, Julia’s instructions guided me through every step of making a beautiful scarf. Her demonstrations were very clear and easy to understand, since she explains every technique and step in great detail. There were also many new things that I learned, including how to prepare squares in advance, which has helped me immensely while working on my project. I also appreciated Julia’s method of finishing the edges, and by carefully following her instructions, I was very happy with the end result. I will be re-watching this course in the future (and will likely review select parts), as it has tons of great information, and I know that the techniques shown will be helpful for many other projects.

“Although I have been felting for many years, I still learned new techniques from this video. In addition to the scarf instructions, Julia explains in detail how to felt clean and straight edges. A wonderful course that I am happy to recommend.”
