About the course

In this course, Svetlana Fomina guides you step by step through the creation of Nautilus — an expressive felted lampshade inspired by the spiral form of a sea shell, with a sculptural body, flowing tentacles, rich surface decoration, and a magical inner light. This is not a simple “follow the pattern” project. It is a course about understanding form, structure, and surface. You will learn how a flat wool layout can become a three-dimensional object, how to work with positive and negative templates, how to build relief, how to use decorative fibers, fabrics, yarns, glass, shells, and beads, and how to bring everything together into one coherent felted piece. If complex shapes usually feel intimidating, this course will help you see the logic behind them. Svetlana shows the process slowly and clearly: from preparing the materials and templates, to laying out the wool, adding decoration, felting, fulling, shaping, hardening, assembling, and finishing the final details. You will receive detailed video instruction, printable template files, diagrams, and handouts, so you can follow the process at your own pace. By the end of the course, you will not only have the knowledge to create your own Nautilus lampshade. Meet Svetlana Fomina
My name is Svetlana Fomina, and I am a felt artist and teacher. My work with felt is built around experimentation, sculptural form, texture, and light. I love exploring how wool can become more than a flat textile — how it can turn into an object with volume, movement, character, and atmosphere. Over the years, I have learned that complex felted forms are not created by magic. They come from understanding the material: how wool shrinks, how templates work, how decoration becomes part of the surface, and how a soft layout can be transformed into a strong three-dimensional object. In this course, I want to share that understanding with you. Nautilus brings together many of my favorite techniques: positive and negative templates, sculptural shaping, rich surface decoration, tentacles, finishing, hardening, and light. My goal is not only to guide you through one beautiful project, but to help you become more confident in creating your own complex felted forms. I hope this course will give you courage, inspiration, and practical skills — so that you can go beyond flat felt and discover felt as a sculptural, expressive material.
