About the course

Have you ever imagined a sculptural felt lamp, but stopped because you could not see how to construct the form? Elena Talikova’s ingenious book-resist method turns that problem into a clear, flexible system. A series of flat resist pages becomes a complex three-dimensional object—with facets, ribs, openings, ruffles, cords and unexpected internal structures. You do not need to be an engineer or an experienced pattern maker. The course shows you how to design the silhouette, calculate the template with shrinkage, divide the wool evenly, build four consistent layers and work around the resist without losing control of the form. You will also explore surface resists, accurately formed openings, sculptural details, felting with a sander, fulling, shaping, stiffening and ideas for safe modern LED illumination. This is not simply a tutorial for copying one lampshade. It is a complete construction method that you can adapt to your own shapes, colours and sculptural ideas. The course has been carefully restored from Elena’s original filming. There is no new footage—and sadly, there never will be—but the lessons have been reorganised and supported by a new illustrated handbook. Elena will also occasionally join the private Facebook group to answer students’ questions. Basic wet-felting experience is recommended, but advanced sculptural experience is not required. Enrol now and begin turning wool into light.

Meet Elena Talikova

Elena Talikova entered the world of felt like a comet. Her active journey in feltmaking lasted fewer than five years, yet during that remarkably short time she helped open several creative directions that felt artists continue to explore today. Elena began with the polyhedral constructions of Anna Gunnarsdóttir. From these geometric foundations, she moved rapidly towards an entirely personal language: book resists, complex internal structures, sculptural ribs, tubes, ruffles and intricate resist labyrinths governed by their own fascinating mechanics. Her work also evolved from brilliant colour towards undyed wool, natural surfaces and additional plant elements. The challenge that fascinated her was simple to express but difficult to solve: how can a flat template produce a complex, living form? Elena approached this question fearlessly. Instead of treating the resist as a limitation, she transformed it into an instrument for invention. Elena’s path has since carried her further—to ceramics, travel and spiritual practice. This restored course preserves an extraordinary chapter of that journey and a wealth of ideas that is still far from exhausted. Her goal is not to teach you to reproduce one particular lamp. It is to give you the construction principles, confidence and freedom to create forms of your own.

What students are saying

Years after taking Elena’s original course, feltmakers still use its methods, structures and ideas in their own creative work.

”
I would recommend this course because it provides such a strong foundation for future work with felt and book resists. Elena inspired me tremendously. Although I did not go on to make lampshades, I have used the knowledge I gained from her course in so many of my projects since then. The original course was already incredibly substantial, and I am excited to discover the restored version—especially for the opportunity to see and hear Elena again. I cannot wait!
