From Wool to Hat Body
Create a full capeline from wool — a dense, elastic felt hat body with enough material for shaping the crown and brim. You choose the colour, surface, density, and character of the felt from the very beginning.
Shape with Steam and Blocks
Use steam, wooden blocks, a stable stand, pins, and patient hands to transform the felt body into a real hat form. You will see how the crown is shaped, how the brim is controlled, and how felt becomes millinery.
Finish Like a Hatmaker
Finish the hat with classical millinery details: interior sweatband, gimp for brim stability, bias binding for a clean edge, and decorative trims. These small details turn a shaped felt body into a wearable, finished hat.
About the course
Perfect Felt Hat is a restored Felting Academy course with German feltmaker and milliner Sigrid Bannier. In this course, you will learn how to combine wet felting with classical millinery techniques. You begin by making your own felt hat body — a full capeline — from wool, water, soap, colour, and careful fulling. Then you transform this handmade felt into a real hat using steam, wooden blocks, stiffener, gimp, sweatbands, bias binding, and decorative finishing. Sigrid demonstrates several models: a Fedora-inspired hat, a pair of companion hats with exchanged crowns, and a sculptural hat with a folded crown. Along the way, you will see how felt behaves under steam, how to block the crown, how to shape the brim, how to stabilize the edge, and how to finish the inside and outside of the hat with professional care. This is not just a course about making a felted object that looks like a hat. It is about understanding how handmade felt can become real millinery — structured, wearable, personal, and beautifully finished. The course includes the original video lessons, a new structured workbook, and a separate materials guide.
Meet Sigrid Bannier
Sigrid Bannier is a German feltmaker and milliner, and the founder of Bannier Filz. For many years, she has been creating one-of-a-kind handmade felt hats, combining the freedom of wet felting with the precision of classical millinery. Her special passion is the meeting point between these two worlds: felt as a living handmade material, and hatmaking as a craft of form, proportion, structure, and finish. Sigrid’s work is rooted in real making: wool, water, steam, wooden blocks, strong hands, careful shaping, and professional finishing. She is especially interested in traditional and folk hats, but her methods also open the door to contemporary felt hat design. In this course, Sigrid shares the essential techniques that allow handmade felt to become a real hat: making the hat body, stiffening, blocking, shaping the brim, stabilizing the edge with gimp, sewing in the sweatband, and adding the final decorative details. Her approach is practical, precise, and deeply respectful of the material. She shows that a beautiful felt hat does not begin with a large studio or a wall full of blocks — it begins with good felt, clear form, patient hands, and an understanding of how wool can become shape.
